Whenever shopping for a camera or evaluating one for a particular project, I believe it’s important to view footage from that camera locally on one’s editing computer, to evaluate image quality, compatibility, and editing performance. Sample footage of this quality is difficult to find. With the exception of Blackmagic, no major prosumer camera maker provides sample footage for download.
In the case of the S5, I found sample footage hard to find, but especially captured internally. Most samples I’ve seen were recorded with an external raw recorder like the Atomos Ninja V or Blackmagic Video Assist 12G, which are capable of capturing extremely crisp 24MP 6K frames using the full resolution of the sensor. Those recorders make this camera extremely adept for micro-budget filmography. But they also increase the total cost of ownership by 25-75 percent compared to the body alone, and of course add bulk unsuitable for casual carry. If owning or renting one of those recorders for your productions is not an option, these sample clips are for you.
